Portrait of M. Vael

Dark Sci-Fi Horror

M. Vael

Marcus Vael spent eight years as a computational neuroscience researcher before trading the lab for fiction. A Navy brat from Bremerton, Washington, he now writes from a cabin in Anacortes on the edge of the San Juan Islands, keeping the hours of 4 AM to noon and the company of a dog named Qualia.

His debut series, The Nacre Threshold, explores what happens when the boundary between human consciousness and something older begins to dissolve. Precise, cerebral, and deeply unsettling.

The Waking Margin

by M. Vael

A neuroscientist studying consciousness in a remote Pacific Northwest research station begins to suspect that the boundary between human awareness and something vast, ancient, and indifferent is not as stable as anyone believed. The margin is waking. And it knows they are watching.
