Portrait of Gael Ashen

Dark Romantasy

Gael Ashen

Gael Ashen grew up haunted by the stories her grandmother told in the dark: tales of Wild Hunts, unmarked courts, and bargains that outlived the people who made them. She studied cultural mythology and creative writing, but it was the collision of old gods and modern cities that became her obsession.

Her debut series, The Unmarked Courts, reimagines Celtic and Norse mythology in contemporary London, where a Valkyrie-turned-coroner and the Lord of the Wild Hunt navigate crime, duty, and a slow-burn romance neither of them can afford.

She writes from the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by rain and too many candles.

A Valkyrie who chose mortality works as a London coroner, cataloguing the dead she once would have claimed. When bodies begin arriving marked with symbols from the courts she abandoned, she is forced into an alliance with the Lord of the Wild Hunt. The bargain will cost more than either of them expects.

She studies the dead. He is one. Neither of them is as finished with the other as they pretend. A minor Greek death goddess and Kas the Deathless are assigned to the same investigation in 1882 St. Petersburg, where people who should die are not dying.
